Almanca kökenli bir terim olup, 'abrechnen' (hesaplamak, ödeşmek) fiilinden türemiştir. 'Ab-' (ayırma, tamamlanma) ve 'Rechnung' (hesap, fatura) bileşenlerinden oluşur. Türkçeye 'hesaplaşma', 'ödeşme' veya 'fatura' olarak çevrilebilir.
